PROMOTING EXCELLENCE IN FLAT ROOFING
FRA RBM AWARDS - 5th March 2009
Our RBM (Reinforced Bitumen Membrane) Awards highlight and reward the highest standards of design, specification and workmanship, an innovative and successful product for members or specifiers, or a far-reaching Training initiative/achievement
Unlike many Awards programs, they are not judged by an internal committee. Rather, we are fortunate to be able to call on several stellar names in the wider construction industry, who bring a broad and incisive outlook and experience, but follow specific criteria laid down for the Judging Procedure.
The Presentation and Luncheon event has evolved over the last 10 years into an enviable institution, and will be held on Thursday, 5th March, at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London, W1A 4AW.
Please contact Emma, on 0207 448 3857, to order tickets for what will certainly be a splendid and entertaining day out!!
IMPORTANT NEWS (from April 2006!)
The Building Regulations, Part L (conservation of Energy), were revised back in April 2006, but many contractors and specifiers are still unaware of how they apply to Flat Roofs.
On any new building or new extension, the Flat Roof must be designed to provide a 'U'-value of 0.20W/m2k or better. This is generally well understood.
If you intend to replace/ refurbish/ renew more than 25% of a given flat roof area, then Part L requires you to upgrade the Thermal Insulation to provide a 'U'-value of 0.25W/m2k or better. This is still NEWS to many people, even to some Building Control Officers (BCOs)!
Therefore, any refurbishment project must include insulation as above. If a house has been re-roofed but not insulated, it will be recorded in the Home Information Pack, and form a serious deterrent to future buyers. It is feasible that they may want the work to be re-done to meet the Regs (£££), or seek a substantial discount from the asking price (£££), or even ignore the house altogether (!).
There are a very few, very tightly covered possible reasons not to fully insulate. These are included in the Part L documents themselves, which are downloadable from the Government's Planning Portal site. Your BCO should be able to advise.
Please contact us if you have any questions on the Awards, or indeed any other flat roofing matter.
